Furnace Mountain Cliff
One of my favorite aspects of living at the Furnace Mountain Zen Center was exploring the land. Huge monolithic cliff walls sculpt forms throughout the landscape, often emerging from spaces that seem to appear out of nowhere. This painting captures that quality of transformation, as the massive forms appear to fade and shift simultaneously.
The utilization of blue throughout the composition, along with expressive brushstrokes, creates a flickering effect, suggesting that the foreground and background are interchangeable, inviting the viewer to engage with the piece on a deeper level.
